However, for those who may not be familiar with him or have only heard of his reputation, you might wonder who Saenchai is and why he holds such significance in the world of Muay Thai. This article will take you on a journey to learn more about him.

Getting to Know Saenchai

Saenchai PK. Saenchai Muaythai Gym, born Suphachai Saenpong in 1980, is a legendary figure in Muay Thai. Originating from Maha Sarakham Province in northeastern Thailand, Saenchai discovered his passion for boxing early in life, driven by the need to support his family. His remarkable journey from a small village to becoming one of the sport’s most revered fighters is genuinely inspiring.

Known as “Khot Muay Sarakham” (The Legendary Boxer of Sarakham), Saenchai’s career has been extraordinary. Celebrated as the best pound-for-pound Muay Thai fighter of his generation, he has an impressive record in Muay Thai and international boxing.
Saenchai also has a background in football. He was a professional player for a period, representing Muangthong-Nong Chok United, now known as SCG Muangthong United, a prominent club in the Thai League, before returning to Muay Thai.

Today, Saenchai’s influence extends well beyond the ring. He travels globally, sharing his Muay Thai expertise with enthusiasts from diverse backgrounds. His legacy as a fighter and a teacher inspires new generations and reinforces his status as a true icon of the sport.

The Beginning of Saenchai’s Boxing Career

Saenchai’s journey as a fighter began at the age of 8 when he first stepped into the ring at a local temple fair near his home. He won his debut match and earned his first fight purse of 30 baht thanks to his rigorous training.

Driven by a deep passion for the sport and natural talent, Saenchai’s father encouraged him to pursue boxing seriously. He introduced Saenchai to the head of the “Sor. Kingstar” boxing camp, who took him under his wing. Competing under the name “Saenchai Sor. Kingstar,” he fought across the Isan region and eventually claimed his first championship title in the 34-kilogram weight class as a child.

After achieving success in Muay Thai, Saenchai transitioned to professional boxing, where he continued to shine. In 2003, he competed in the PABA Featherweight Championship against the formidable Filipino boxer Rud Kevkatche. Despite his success, a lack of sponsorship limited Saenchai’s professional boxing career to just five fights, all of which he won. His outstanding achievements earned him recognition as the best pound-for-pound fighter.

Despite his success in the ring, Saenchai briefly stepped away from boxing to pursue a career in professional football, playing as a substitute for Muangthong-Nong Chok United. He explained that the decision was partly due to the difficulty of finding opponents in Thailand, as he often had to take on extra weight to compete.

When his football career didn’t take off, Saenchai returned to Muay Thai, where he continued to dominate. His exceptional skill made finding worthy opponents in Thailand challenging, leading to frequent invitations to fight abroad.

Saenchai has brought immense fame and honor to himself and his country. Between 2014 and 2019, Saenchai set an impressive record of 50 consecutive wins, with his 50th victory in October 2019 at Thai Fight, where he faced Batjargal Sundui, a boxer from Mongolia.

This Thai fighter is celebrated for his graceful yet lightning-fast techniques, including his kicks, sweeps, and cut kicks. His unique style has not only inspired many but has also captivated fans around the globe who eagerly watch him in the ring.
